Leger
The progenitor of the Leger’s of Acadia is Jacques Leger, a drummer in the French military who was born in France in 1693. Jacques married twice, first to Guillaume Trahan and then to Madeleine Brun. Together Jacques and Madeleine had eleven children which included four sons and seven daughters. At the time of the expulsions most of the Leger’s were living in the Petitcodiac area, around Port Royal, or on Ile St. Jean (PEI). Joseph, the second son of Jacques and Madeleine, was living in the trois-rivieres area when the Acadian expulsion began. Initially the family was able to escape, however in 1760 the family either surrendered or was captured and relocated to Fort Edward in Windsor. Joseph and his family of 5 remained at Fort Edward for the remainder of the war, and after the war lived in Windsor till 1767. Many of the Leger’s that descended from Jacques relocated to either French Canada, primarily Quebec on the St. Lawrence, or to Louisiana and the American South, however some Leger’s descendants could be found in greater Acadie in New Brunswick (especially around the trois-rivieres region).
