Reynolds
Benjamin Reynolds was one of the original grantees of Newport, N.S. in the Crown Grant of 21 July 1761. Benjamin was born 15 November 1722 to Benjamin (born 10 May 1686 ) and Susanna Rawson (born 3 October 1686 - died 11 August 1762) in Bristol, Massachusetts, New England. Benjamin sailed from Rhode Island to Nova Scotia on the Sloop Sally in May 1760. Benjamin originally drew Newport Farm lot B 3rd Div. No. 5, however he exchanged this lot for a lot of the St. Croix River (lB 1st Div. No. 5). In the following years Benjamin and Susanna sold their lots in Newport township and on 27 August 1772 bought two lots in Cornwallis township. Little is known about Benjamin Reynolds and his family after 1772, however it may be a possibility that they returned to New England amidst the unrest prior to the revolution.
Benjamin and his wife Susanne had seven children together, however little is known about them:
Susanna (born 16 February 1755)
Mary (born 16 February 1755)
Sarah (born 6 June 1756)
Benjamin (birth date unknown)
Jonathon (birth date unknown)
Robert (birth date unknown)
Ruth (born 20 July 1760) married Benjamin Congdon in Cornwallis, N.S. on 7 June 1777. Together they had a family of five.
Benjamin is often confused for his (nephew?) Nathaniel Reynolds who was one of the original grantees of Falmouth, N.S. in 1761. Nathaniel participated in the rebel attack on Fort Cumberland (outside of Amherst, N.S.). Nathaniel returned to New England and served as a sea captain in the revolutionary militia. Captain Nathaniel Reynolds was drowned at sea off the coast of Marblehead, Massachusetts during a storm.
