Poitier
The Poitier’s in Acadia were descendants of Jean Poithier and wife Anne (Poirier). Jean was born in France in 1672 and sailed to Port Royal sometime before 1699 as that is the year he and Anne were married at Port Royal. The Poitier’s can be found in present day New Brunswick, Quebec, Louisiana, France, and around the area of les Mines (the Minas Basin region). The family of Dominique Poitier, grandson of Jean Poitier, are known to have been imprisoned by the British in Fort Edward between 1761 and 1762 and it is likely this line of Poitier’s that would have been used as labor by the Planters in the Windsor, Falmouth, and Newport settlements.
