Did you know that the Avon River Heritage Society museum owes its architecture in part to Edmund McCarthy?

Born in 1846, McCarthy married midwife Ida May, nearly 30 years his junior, and operated a grocery store as well as the post office of Avondale, a building which our museum was designed and constructed after in 1997.

McCarthy passed away in 1929 at an age of 83 years old and is buried in the Avondale Cemetery along with his wife Ida and daughter Hannah.

Quite often we meet descendants of the early settlers who arrived here in Newport Landing upon the Lydia and the Sally. Pictured below is Edmund and his great-grand daughter Kathleen White, who visits us often.
