The Honeymoon House
In 1909 Thomas Henry Armstrong Mounce, named for his grandfather, a sea Captain, married Annie Mosher, a descendant of wealthy local shipbuilders who first arrived in Newport Landing, by way of New England, in 1760.
As a wedding present Thomas took his new wife on a tour of the world, while his brother Ralph stayed home, overseeing the construction of Annie's wedding present, an elaborate new house set on approximately thirty five acres, overlooking both the St Croix and the Avon River.
While on their tour they collected many items for their new home including wood tables carved in Spain and India; a marriage chest from Italy, copper from Portugal, 18th century cabinets with sliding doors and floral marquetry; English pewter; decorative wallpaper; paintings; grandfather clocks; chandeliers; and several spinning wheels.
Below we have included an album of some of the fine details to be found within the home, including hand painted walls and hand carved wood throughout, displaying the fine craftsmanship of the local shipbuilders.
