The Knowles Homestead

The land on which this farm sits was first granted and settled by Jonathan Rogers on January 25, 1761. At Windsor, a deed was recorded on September 20, 1768 where “Jonathan Rogers, trader, of Middleton in the county of Newport and colony of Rhode Island, having obtained a license of alienation from Lieut. Governor Franklyn, sold to Henry Knowles of the same place, mariner, for the consideration of 560 Spanish milled dollars, all the land describes as follow:

Several tracts or lots of land lying and being in Newport, Hants CO., Province of Nova Scotia, containing by estimate as follows:

1st – Farm lot containing by estimate 200 acres, bounded southerly on the highway and westerly on James Harvie’s Land.

2nd – A dyke lot of ten acres

3rd – A dyke lot of three acres

4th – A dyke marsh of six acres.”

The farm at present is owned by David and Gordon Knowles. It has been owned by their father, Clifford Henry Knowles. Clifford was a great-great-grandson of the Henry Knowles who first bought the farm.

Behind the Knowles home is a small cemetery in which many of the family were buried. One such person being Mrs. Betsy Knowles-Tupper D.D., father of Sir Charles Tupper. They were married in the house which still stands and is now occupied by David Knowles and family.¹
