Hosted in partnership with the Avon River Arts Society, Open Studio weekly drop-in sessions for artists, hobbyists and musicians take place in the Artists Landing Studio and in the Lydia and Sally café, both located in the Avon River Heritage Centre.
Arrive with a project or an instrument, join in the conversation and let the majestic Avon River be your inspiration! Everyone is welcome, no fee to participate.
This summer Open Studio celebrates its 10th anniversary and Cara Sawka and Liz Robinson have stepped up to carry the torch and keep the good times flowing by continuing to bring a musical element to the primarily visual arts based collective.
In an effort to accommodate more people and tastes we're extending the drop-in sessions to Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Mort Lohnes will join Liz on Wednesday afternoons with his Gibson guitar and nostalgia for singing old time country classics, while most Thursdays Cara will be bringing out her fiddle and some occasional accordion to share some toe tapping tunes.
For those who prefer a quieter environment, we also have additional work space upstairs in the gallery and in the art studio, where you will find our collection of.art making supplies available for use, including several looms.
Scheduled music afternoons with Cara Sawka
June 6th, June 27th, July 11th, August 8th & August 22nd

A regular participant of Open Studio since 2014, over the last 5 years much of Tacha Reed's paintings, fibre art and installation pieces have been exploring the Avon River, the species that exist within the muddy water of the estuary, and the changes to the local environment caused by man and ongoing development.
In June of 2019 Tacha installed Spirit Salmon (Ghost Salmon) along Simpson's Creek, which runs along the length of the museum, flowing into the Avon River. In 2020 she began expanding on the series to include representations of all of the Spawning Fish of the Avon River, which she will work on during her residency in the summer of 2023.

In the fall of 2022 we welcomed singer, writer and yogi, Linda McLean, who hosted a series of yoga and free writing classes in the art gallery. She completed the series with a preview of Lyrics & Letters, a performance and book launch she’ll begin touring nationally this fall.
In the summer of 2023 Linda McLean joins visual artist Tacha Reed on Thursday afternoons as our Artists in Residence, where she'll be further developing her Lyrics & Letters project before taking it on tour.
In the fall Tacha and Linda will join forces for the project Song of the Frost Fish, developing a performance and children's book, which aims to educate and create an understanding of what is under the surface of the Avon River, and the historic and ecological significance of this spawning area for all sizes of creatures. A gentle reminder that this breeding ground is a part of the web of the entire planet.

Currently in the Avon region there has been much discussion regarding the twinning of Highway 101 along the Windsor Causeway and how to resolve some of the environmental issues that were created by the initial construction over 5 decades ago, and most recently with the flooding of the former lake, aborting a newly forming ecosystem and blocking fish passage.
The lack of proper fish passage over the last 50 years has greatly restricted migration for spawning fish, especially the endangered wild Inner Bay of Fundy Salmon. This blockage has led to a massive build-up of silt throughout the Avon River, exacerbating erosion along the shoreline of the Avon and the other rivers that feed into it, like the St. Croix and Kennetcook.
Once completed Song of the Frost Fish will be a multidisciplinary experience that combines visuals, storytelling and music to connect audiences to the adventuring foxes and deepen community awareness of our effect on the lands and waters that we share with all the elements.
By following the story of the two young foxes on a journey to discover the source of a curious sound in the distance, by seeing the world through their eyes, and by hearing the sounds and singing the songs that rise from the soul of the land, children and their guardians will learn that we are all together and equally dependent on this beautiful region we share.
